Three Wise Monkeys

I’ve started working on some little studies in watercolour, ink and graphite for a new triptych depicting the Three Wise Monkeys; Mizaru, covering his eyes, who sees no evil; Kikazaru, covering his ears, who hears no evil; and Iwazaru, covering his mouth, who speaks no evil.

When I was a very young child, I had become fascinated with the three monkeys after finding a little ornament on my Aunt’s mantlepiece that she had picked up somewhere on her travels. I found a similar ornament recently at a market in China, and was instantly transported back to my childhood.

The symbolism of not holding onto evil, or indulging in negativity, really resonates with me; it’s a beautiful reminder to let go of that which doesn’t serve you.
