I’m often asked whether I do private commissions, particularly portraits… and the answer is that I certainly do; when I can. There’s something about it that makes me feel warm and fuzzy in a sentimental way; especially when it comes to portraits of children, or even pets. It’s quite a personal process, even when I don’t get to meet the ‘sitter’ (which is usually the case).
For me, I find it really important to keep the ‘client’ involved through the process, and I’ll always start with some initial sketches or smaller studies – so together we can decide on the composition, expression and colour palette.
This is one of the early studies that I did of Zoe, a beautiful little girl from Ontario, Canada.
